American Polyurea publishes a weekly industry news roundup covering regulatory updates, market developments, and news from the polyurea professional community. This week’s edition covers June 9-15, 2026.
Regulatory Update: AMPP Pipeline Coating Inspection Guidelines Revision
AMPP (Association for Materials Protection and Performance) published updated pipeline coating inspection guidelines this week, incorporating new requirements for documentation of field-applied coating on high-consequence pipeline segments. The revision specifically addresses inspection protocols for polyurea field joint coatings applied over factory-applied FBE (fusion-bonded epoxy) systems. Key changes include: mandatory holiday detection testing at 100 volts per mil (DFT) for field joint coatings in Class 3 and Class 4 pipeline locations, expanded documentation requirements for inspector qualifications, and updated guidance on adhesion testing frequency in environmentally sensitive areas.
American Polyurea members working in pipeline applications should review the updated guidelines and assess any impact on their current quality control programs. The full guidelines are available through AMPP membership. See our Industry Resources & Standards page for links to AMPP resources.
Market Update: Polyurea Raw Material Pricing Stabilizes After Q1 Volatility
After the pricing turbulence that characterized Q1 2026 — driven largely by MDI supply chain disruptions in Asia and logistics cost increases — polyurea raw material pricing appears to have stabilized in June. Multiple major distributor contacts report that MDI pricing has moderated by approximately 8-12% from the February peak, and that supply availability has improved significantly. This is positive news for applicators who faced margin pressure during the first quarter.
The outlook for the remainder of 2026 is cautiously positive, with the caveat that continued uncertainty in global logistics and energy markets could create renewed volatility. Applicators are advised to review material pricing for any outstanding project bids that were submitted during the high-pricing period and evaluate whether renegotiation is warranted. Detailed market analysis will be presented at the July 22 National Mid-Year Webinar — register through the Events page.
Southeast Chapter: Record 6 Members Complete Certification in May
The Southeast Chapter reported that six members passed the American Polyurea Certified Applicator examination in May 2026 — the highest single-month count in the chapter’s history. The new certified applicators represent Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia. Chapter Chair Marcus Johnson credited the chapter’s monthly pre-exam study sessions and peer mentoring program for the strong pass rate.
“We started running structured study sessions for members preparing for the exam about 18 months ago,” Johnson said. “Having a peer group working through the material together — and having certified members available to answer questions — makes a significant difference in exam preparation.” Members interested in pursuing certification can find preparation resources in the Education section and information on the credential at Become an Applicator.
New Member Welcome: American Polyurea Adds 18 Members in First Half of June
American Polyurea welcomed 18 new members in the first two weeks of June 2026, continuing the strong growth pace established over the past 12 months. The new members include applicators from 11 states, two coatings inspectors, a structural engineer who will participate as an associate member, and three equipment and materials distributors who joined as industry partner members.
Total active membership as of June 15, 2026 stands at 1,247 — up from 1,022 at the same date in 2025, representing 22% year-over-year growth. The Southwest and Southeast chapters have seen the strongest membership growth. Project Spotlight: Midwest Member Completes Major Secondary Containment Project
Midwest Chapter member Scott Hennessy (Hennessy Industrial Coatings, Indianapolis, IN) reported completion of a 32,000 square foot secondary containment lining project at a chemical blending facility in central Indiana. The project involved complete removal of an aging epoxy coating system that had delaminated in multiple areas, followed by polyurea surface profile restoration, primer application, and a two-coat polyurea system specified at 80 mils minimum DFT.
Notable about the project was the accelerated schedule: the entire scope — surface preparation through final inspection — was completed in 9 days, compared to the 21-day estimate the facility manager had received for a competing epoxy system. The rapid-cure nature of polyurea allowed each phase to proceed without the extended cure times that would have been required for an epoxy system, enabling 24/7 operational schedule on the coating work. The raw material pricing update is welcome news. We were getting squeezed badly on Q1 projects that had been bid in late 2025 based on the old pricing. Good to see the market stabilizing ahead of the busy summer season.
